The Ernest G. Chachere Graduate Fellowship Supplement Awards Program

The UNO Graduate School is accepting applications through July 1 for the 2008 Ernest G. Chachere Doctoral Diversity Fellowships for minority students in the fields of science and engineering.

The fellowships provide full tuition at the UNO Graduate School, a $22,000 stipend per academic year for four consecutive years, and a four-year membership in the Southern Regional Education Board Doctoral Scholars Program.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are classified as U.S. Minority by the U.S. Census Bureau are eligible to apply: African American, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, American Indian and Alaska Native.

Eligible UNO doctoral programs include: physics, chemistry, biological sciences, earth and environmental sciences, civil and environmental engineering, naval architecture and marine engineering, mathematics, financial economics, computer science, and the social sciences of political science, behavioral and applied psychology and urban planning/studies.

The Ernest G. Chachere Fellowship is intended to increase the representation of U.S. Minority students in the physical and mathematical sciences and engineering departments at UNO.

Fellowship awards are made without regard to financial need. Fellows must pursue their doctoral degree on a full-time basis and are not permitted to be employed either part- or full-time during the duration of the award unless first approved by the Southern Regional Education Board.

The fellowships are made possible by a grant from the SREB and the Louisiana Board of Regents.

The Doctoral Diversity Fellowships at UNO are named in honor of Dr. Ernest G. Chachere, UNO professor emeritus of education, who has extensive experience in diversity and international affairs. He was Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Minority Affairs at UNO after serving as the director of International Programs, Center for the Pacific Rim. Dr. Chachere has also worked with the Fulbright-Hays U.S. Department of Education with the International Curriculum Development Seminar in Thailand, Peoples Republic of China, Honduras, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and the United Republic of Cameroon.

Dr. Chachere has authored and co-authored many articles on education in such publications as Record in Administration and Supervision, Louisiana Education Research Journal, The Clearing House, LOAN Introspect, Journal of Negro Education and ERIC Resources in Education. He has been awarded no fewer than eight grants enabling him to study minority issues in the United States as well as around the world. Dr. Chachere has been presented with honorary citizenships in Leaocheng and the Peoples Republic of China. He was also awarded the Southern Fellowships Award by the Ford Foundation, the Distinguished Faculty Award by UNO, the Quest Award for Excellence by United Teachers of New Orleans, and the Campus Diversity Exemplary Models Award by the American Association of University Administrators.

Dr. Chachere earned a bachelor's degree in music from the New England Conservatory of Music, a master's in education from Louisiana State University and a doctorate in education from UNO.
